瑞秋·曾格勒2001年5月3日生于新泽西州哈肯萨克的哈肯萨克大学医学中心（英语：Hackensack University Medical Center）[4]。母亲吉娜·曾格勒（Gina Zegler）是哥伦比亚人[5]，父亲是波兰人[6][7][8]。她还有个姊姊贾桂琳（Jacqueline）[9]。

在新泽西州克利夫顿成长的曾格勒就读当地的圣菲利普使徒预备学校（St. Philip the Apostle Preparatory School）。之后就读私立天主教女子学校圣母无原罪高中（英语：Immaculate Conception High School (Lodi, New Jersey)），并参加了四年的学校音乐剧演出，如《美女与野兽（英语：Beauty and the Beast (musical)）》（2016年）、《小美人鱼（英语：The Little Mermaid (musical)）》（2017年）、《第四十二街（英语：42nd Street (musical)）》（2018年）和《史瑞克音乐剧（英语：Shrek The Musical）》（2019年）[10][11]。四部演出皆让她提名大城奖（Metro Award）最佳女主角[10]。2019年6月2日从高中毕业[12]。

2018年1月，史蒂芬·史匹柏透过Twitter公开《西城故事》的选角征讯[13]。16岁的曾格勒用自己演唱〈今晚（英语：Tonight (West Side Story song)）〉和〈我感到漂亮（英语：I Feel Pretty）〉的影片回应了选角推文，曾格勒最终成功拿下女主角玛丽亚（Maria）的演出机会；是从超过三万名申请者中脱颖而出[14]。她曾在卑尔根表演艺术中心（英语：Bergen Performing Arts Center）演出该角[15]。在《西城故事》的演出受到外界好评，让她获得金球奖最佳音乐及喜剧类电影女主角等影评奖项[16]。
